Has your child missed their flu vaccination at school?

  • 2 min read

The parents and carers of children that have missed receiving their flu vaccination at school are encouraged to make alternative arrangements for their child to receive the immunisation.

The expansion of the flu vaccination programme this winter means that all school age pupils are eligible for a free flu vaccine, including secondary school pupils. The flu vaccine is usually given as a painless nasal spray and is a safe way to help protect children against flu. It should start to protect most children against flu about 10-14 days after they get their vaccine.

The vaccine will reduce the risk of children getting flu or spreading it to family and friends who are at greater risk from flu.

The flu vaccination program commenced in schools on the 4th of September and will continue until the 15th of December 2023. If a child has missed their vaccination from the School Immunisation Team to date, their parent or carer should call 0800 030 8013 at their earliest convenience to make a new appointment. The line will be open from Monday to Friday from 9.00am to 6.00pm and Saturdays from 08.00am to 1.00pm

Dr Emilia Crighton, Director of Public Health, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde said:

“The flu virus changes every year, that’s why it’s important to get an annual vaccination so that your child has the most up to date protection. Getting your child vaccinated against flu can also protect them from other infections with bacteria that can follow flu and prevent them from getting sick.

“If your child’s school appointment for flu vaccinations is coming up, we encourage you to ensure that you have completed and returned the consent form to the school to ensure that this can take place. If your child has unfortunately missed their appointment at the school, please call to make an appointment as soon as possible.”
