Diabetes Week 2023 – Derek’s Story

  • 3 min read

Derek, who was living with Type 2 Diabetes was referred by the Community Weight Management Service to WW in May 2019. He has since lost 5 stone 9lbs and has reversed his Type 2 Diabetes.

At his annual diabetic review, Derek was told that if he didn’t get his blood sugar levels down and lose weight, by the time he reached 50 he could risk losing a limb. At that point, Derek was taking 10 tablets a day to help keep his Type 2 diabetes under control.

Due to his weight, Derek struggled to do basic things like tie his shoelaces. He has an active job and he found that any physical work was becoming harder and harder. He also struggled to find clothes to fit him being a UK size 5 XL.

Derek decided it was time to take control of his weight by making lifestyle changes, He lost 1 stone and 11lbs on his own, but he knew he needed more support to continue his weight loss journey.

In May 2019, Derek was referred to the Weight Management service.

He worked with his coach to set a weight loss goal and by November 2019, he had successfully got down to his goal weight. He even managed to reverse his diabetes, and was able to reduce his medication tablets from 10 pills a day to just 1!

Since his weight loss, his activity levels have significantly improved. Derek said “My lifestyle has changed as I feel more active and better within myself, I don’t struggle to do more physical things as much as I did before my journey started.”

His eating habits have also dramatically changed. Before Derek would enjoy fatty junk foods from snack bars for lunch throughout the week. He would then have at least 5 takeaway meals for dinner per week. Now Derek will have meals such as a can of soup and a packet of lower fat healthier option crisps for lunch, and dinners will be portion controlled, healthier home cooked meals with lots of veggies!

Derek’s top tip would be to always stay on your plan. Don’t beat yourself up if you don’t get a result every week, just stick in and keep going.
