Environmental Control Services

Provides services to patients within the Greater Glasgow and Clyde Health Board area. This service enables people with severe disabilities to independently control their home environment including door-entry, intercom, telephony, AV equipment, heating and lighting.

Neurobiomechanics Service

Supports patients with complex gait problems by integrating the assessment and planning of medical, therapy and orthotic interventions making use of a range of simple and complex gait analysis equipment.

Prosthetics Service

The Prosthetics Service provides life long prosthetics care for individuals with amputation and/or congenital absence of a limb. This may include patients with multiple level limb absence and/or complex clinical requirements.

Wheelchair and Seating Service

The largest service provided by WestMARC with a caseload exceeding 42,000 wheelchair users. Clinics are conducted within the Centre and at many satellite locations across the West of Scotland. This service works with Universities to provide placements for students.

The medicine for the elderly unit on the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Campus is housed in the modern Langlands Building.

The unit provides specialist rehabilitation services for older people. This includes a garden area which can be used by patients with dementia or other cognitive impairment.

The Langhill Clinic is a mental health inpatient facility for adults. There are 2 separate wards IPCU – Intenstive Psychiatric Care Unit or the AAU – Adult Acute Unit. The building also houses the Milan Suite which is the Tribunal Suite.

The Clinic has 20 acute mental health admission beds and an eight-bed intensive care unit. Each patient has their own bedroom with en-suite shower and facilities. The clinic also has purpose built activity areas and landscaped gardens accessible from the wards.

The ground floor of the clinic houses a day patient facility and treatment rooms, alongside an out-of-hour’s acute assessment suite.

The Institute of Neurological Sciences

The Institute of Neurological Sciences (INS) opened in 1974 with the expressed desire for an  inter- and multidisciplinary, academic and clinical approach that enabled it to be at the forefront of developments in clinical care. Throughout the late 20th and early 21st century, the INS has continued to provide specialist and world class clinical care to the patients resident in the West of Scotland. 

Today, the INS is a tertiary and quaternary referral centre providing both regional and national clinical services.

It comprises of a number of medical and surgical specialties within the field of neurosciences, as follows: Neurology, Neurosurgery, Neuroanaesthesia, Interventional NeuroradiologyOral and maxillofacial surgery, Neurophysiology, Neurorehabilitation and Neuropsychology. 

The Queen Elizabeth National Spinal Injuries Unit which opened in 1992 is also co-located on site.

WestMarc

WestMARC, West of Scotland Mobility and Rehabilitation Centre, is an NHS department based within NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde. It provides a wide range of rehabilitation technology services:

  • Wheelchair and Seating
  • Prosthetics and Physiotherapy
  • Environmental Controls
  • Gait Analysis

Although based in NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, WestMARC serves a population of approximately 2.6 million people across six Health Boards such as Ayrshire and Arran, Dumfries and Galloway, Forth Valley, Greater Glasgow and Clyde, Highland (Argyll and Bute only) and Lanarkshire.

Ward 64 is a 23 bedded neurosurgical unit.

Our patients are referred from their GP from all over the West of Scotland for emergency admission.

Ward specialties are brain and spinal conditions that need neurosurgery intervention.

Expertise in full spectrum of general neurosurgical conditions – degenerative spinal problems, traumatic brain injury, brain haemorrhage and stroke, brain tumours, brain infections, and hydrocephalus (build-up of fluid on the brain).

We also look after other conditions, due to the different specialisms of the consultants on ward 64.

These include spinal cord tumours, deep brain stimulation procedures for the treatment of movement disorders like Parkinson’s disease and tremor, pituitary and skullbase tumours, blood vessel abnormalities of the brain such as aneurysms, endoscopic treatment of hydrocephalus, and complex spine conditions requiring fixation.
