Alan Cowan, Non-Executive Board Member

Non-Executive Member

Biography

Alan Cowan is appointed as a non-executive member from 1st July 2016 until 30th June 2024.

Alan is a retired RAF Group Captain and has worked in a wide range of senior health leadership appointments in the UK, Europe, Middle East and USA.

A graduate of the RAF College Cranwell, he led the UK specialist military medical retrieval teams, delivering worldwide aeromedical critical care and evacuation. Subsequently, he represented the UK on veterans’ health issues in the US Department of Veterans Affairs when based in Washington DC, and led the development of a new strategy for the UK Defence Medical Services. 

He is a past Board member of Voluntary Health Scotland, a Community Resilience Officer, and has a regional Reserve Forces leadership role.

Alan brings strengths in operational leadership and strategy together with experience in working across professional, cultural and national boundaries.

Simon Carr

Non-Executive Member

Biography

Simon Carr is appointed as a non-executive board member from 1st September 2015 until 31st August 2023.

Simon has over thirty five years’ experience working in the voluntary sector, most of which has been spent as a senior officer in the social care and housing sector.

With a track record of developing innovative solutions to complex problems, he looks forward to bringing that experience to NHS Glasgow and Clyde. He has developed and led complex transformation programmes to help ensure organisations remain focused to meet the changing needs of the people that use their services.

Simon Carr understands the challenges the NHS faces nationally and in Greater Glasgow and Clyde, and he looks forward to making a contribution.

Dr Jennifer Armstrong

Medical Director

Biography

Dr Jennifer Armstrong was appointed Medical Director of Greater Glasgow and Clyde in April 2012.

Jennifer qualified in Medicine in 1988 at the University of Glasgow and worked in hospitals in Glasgow and Clyde, gaining experience in Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Accident and Emergency before training in General Medicine.

After gaining the Royal College of Physician exams, she joined the West of Scotland training scheme for Public Health Medicine. During this time, she gained a Master in Public Health (Glasgow University 1995), Member of the Faculty of Public Health (1998) and was awarded a Diploma in Management Studies with Distinction (Glasgow Caledonian University 1999).  In 2007, she was elected Fellow of the Faculty of Public Health.

She combined 4 years as a General Manager of Trauma and Medical Services with the Director of the Acute Services Review in the former North Glasgow Trust. In addition, Dr Armstrong worked as a locum consultant in Public Health Medicine in community services.  In 2004, she moved to take up a senior medical advisor post with the National Services Division in Edinburgh. She was responsible for assessing the clinical quality and safety of specialist services in Scotland as well as working with clinical experts for UK specialist services. In 2007, she moved to the Scottish Government as a senior medical officer. She provided senior clinical leadership for acute NHS care and screening services.  She chaired a range of national groups concerned with palliative care, quality of cancer care and surgical services before returning to Glasgow and Clyde in 2012 to take up the post of Medical Director.

Chief Executive

Biography

Ms Jane Grant is appointed in her capacity as Chief Executive of Greater Glasgow and Clyde NHS Board from 1st April 2017.

Jane was previously the Chief Executive of NHS Forth Valley for a period of three and a half years. Prior to joining NHS Forth Valley Ms Grant spent four and a half years as Chief Operating Officer for NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde.

She joined the NHS in 1983 as a Management Services Officer within Highland Health Board, and also worked in Stobhill Hospital as Deputy Administrator in her early career.

In the early 1990s, Jane moved to Lanarkshire Health Board as Hospital Administrator within Hairmyres Hospital. This was followed by a variety of posts within Lanarkshire, culminating in her appointment as General Manager of Hairmyres Hospital in 1999.

Ms Grant moved back to Glasgow in 2000 to become the General Manager for Surgery in North Glasgow. She was appointed as Director of Surgery and Anaesthetics for NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde in early 2006 and became the Board’s Chief Operating Officer in 2009. She was appointed as Chief Executive of NHS Forth Valley in October 2013.

Access to the building

Access during core business hours is via the front door on the 1st floor, from 8.30am to 5.15pm. This also provides disabled access.

Secondary access, plus extended hours access, is via the rear door on the ground floor, from 7.00am to 7.00pm. This also provides disabled access. This door has security code entrance.

There is one lift, which is primarily intended for disabled visitors use.

All visitors must sign in at the reception desk which is located at the front entrance.
