Staff Vaccination 2026/27

The joint committee on vaccination and immunisation (JCVI) advice is to offer the vaccines to those at high risk of serious illness from flu or COVID-19 and who are therefore most likely to benefit from vaccination. 

All those eligible will be invited for vaccination. NHS Scotland will contact you with more information if you’re eligible for the COVID-19 and/or flu vaccines.

As winter approaches, flu can have a significant impact on our health, our families, and the services we provide. Receiving your seasonal flu vaccination is one of the simplest and most effective ways to protect yourself, your colleagues, and those in our care.

Each year, flu contributes to staff absences, places additional pressure on healthcare services, and increases the risk of serious illness for vulnerable patients. By choosing to get vaccinated, you are helping to reduce the spread of flu within our communities and supporting NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde to continue delivering safe, high-quality care throughout the winter period.

The flu vaccine is available free of charge to NHS and Health & Social Care staff who have direct patient or client contact and is strongly recommended, even if you are fit and healthy. While no vaccine can provide complete protection, vaccination remains the most effective way to reduce your risk of flu and its potentially serious complications.

Who is eligible?

• Those living in long-stay residential care homes or other long-stay care facilities
• All those aged 65 and over
• All those aged 18 to 65 years in defined risk groups. This includes:
  o those in clinical at-risk groups set out in Influenza: the green book, chapter 19 – GOV.UK
  o those experiencing homelessness
  o those experiencing substance misuse
  o asylum seekers living in Home Office hotel or B&B accommodation
  o all prisoners within the Scottish prison estate
  o pregnant women
• Frontline health and social care workers
• All NHS staff
• Poultry workers & bird handlers (eligibility information in Annex A)
• Cattle & Swine workers (eligibility information in Annex B)
• Unpaid carers and young carers
• Household contacts of those with immunosuppression

For anyone that is hospital based, there are over 40 peer vaccinators working across our hospital sites continuing to offer staff vaccines within their ward settings.

Health and social care staff are also able to access community pharmacy to receive their flu vaccine at a time and place that is convenient to them. To find out participating pharmacies, please see ‘community pharmacy’ section.

Community flu vaccination clinics are also available. These can be booked by visiting Login – Customer Service (nhs.scot) or calling 0800 030 8013 during the hours of Monday to Friday 9.00am to 6.00pm or Saturday 9.00am to 1.00pm.

For staff with a weakened immune system who access the national booking portal. They may say an automatic message advising them to wait until they have received their letter. This is directed at those staff members who are 65 or over, immunocompromised, or ‘at-risk’.

Our Vaccination Team will be visiting the following locations between 14th September to 27th September 2026 to provide flu vaccinations for NHS staff.

The Peer Immunisation Programme is a key part of the NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde staff flu vaccination campaign. It enables trained staff volunteers to deliver flu vaccinations to colleagues within their own workplaces, making it easier and more convenient for staff to get protected.

Peer Immunisers play a vital role in increasing vaccine uptake, protecting our workforce and patients, and helping to maintain essential services throughout the winter months. We are delighted to already have volunteers from across NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde supporting this year’s campaign. However, to maximise our reach and accessibility, we are keen to recruit even more Peer Immunisers from a wide range of teams, services and locations.

By becoming a Peer Immuniser, you can make a meaningful contribution to the health and wellbeing of your colleagues while supporting NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde’s commitment to delivering safe, effective care during the winter season.

Alongside this, Peer Champions help to promote the importance of vaccination within their teams and departments. Peer Champions act as advocates for the campaign by sharing key messages, encouraging colleagues to get vaccinated, raising awareness of local clinics, and helping to create a positive culture around immunisation.

Winter vaccines for Health and Social Care Staff

Why are these vaccines so important?

The flu vaccine is the best way to help protect yourself against flu this year.  It reduces the risk of spreading flu to your family, patients and colleagues who could be at risk of catching the virus.

Immunisation of health and social care staff aims to protect workers at high risk of exposure. If you don’t have face to face patient contact, and are not otherwise eligible.

Getting the vaccines you are eligible for will also support your health, safety and wellbeing over the winter period and help reduce the level of sickness absence. This, in turn, will support staff to maintain services for patients.

Participating community pharmacies

Health and social care staff can also choose to receive their flu vaccination through participating community pharmacies, providing a convenient option based on individual location and availability.

There is no requirement to present identification when attending for vaccination; however, staff should advise the community pharmacy that they are an NHS or HSCP employee.

Who is eligible?

• Health social care and social work staff who work directly with patients and provide support services are eligible for the flu vaccine this year.
• Non-frontline NHS staff are also eligible for the flu vaccine.
• Vaccination of staff groups will protect health services from staff absences during the winter months. It is recommended staff take up the offer of vaccination this year to protect those in their care and themselves.
