Fundraising campaign helps bring entertainment to Gartnavel ward

The daughter of a patient at Gartnavel General Hospital has helped provide a number of televisions to the hospital through a fundraising campaign.

Michelle Stuart’s father, Michael Mckernan, has been in hospital for five months following a brain injury and Michelle has helped to bring some entertainment to the ward.

Using the power of social media, Michelle was able to start a campaign to help raise money for the patients of ward 2A.

Thanks to generous donations from family and friends, seven televisions were donated to the ward alongside £500 following a GoFundMe campaign.

Michelle said: “My dad has been in hospital for five months and there are others who have been here longer. These are long term patients and I really wanted to help bring some entertainment and make a difference.

“Televisions help patients keep a link with the outside world and thanks to donations from Columbus FM, Innovation Flooring, Just Dance for Maggies Chairty and two close friends, we were able to provide the ward with seven televisions.

“The GoFundMe page has also raised over £500 which I am extremely thankful for. Now that we have the televisions, I will look to redistribute the funding for other entertainment purposes for ward 2A.

“I was blown away by the kindness of everyone who has donated in what is such a difficult financial time for people and I can’t thank them enough.

“Watching TV may not make everyone’s life better but hopefully it can make a difference to these patients. Not everyone has friends of family who can visit them and it is especially difficult for anyone to be in hospital at this time of year and this can bring an element of home comfort.”

Morag Gardner, Deputy Nurse Director for Acute Services, said: “I would like to extend my sincere thanks to Michelle for all her fundraising efforts.

“Through the generosity of her friends and family, the ward now has a seven televisions to keep the patients entertained.

“Our estates team were able to get these up and running for this weekend’s World Cup Final that I am sure the patients would have enjoyed.

“On behalf of the NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, I would again like to thank Michelle for her kindness and commitment in making our patients time in hospital that bit easier.”
