Children’s flu vaccinations – what you need to know

Three-year-old Delilah Forrest gets her vaccine at the Shields Health and Care Centre in Glasgow

Parents and carers across Greater Glasgow and Clyde are being encouraged to take action and get their children vaccinated against flu.

Families with eligible children will either receive an appointment letter inviting them to attend a local vaccination clinic or, in the case of school-age children, a consent form through their school. Parents and carers are being asked to make use of appointments or return consent forms as quickly as possible to help ensure children are protected before flu becomes more widespread this winter.

The programme includes community clinics for eligible pre-school children as well as in-school vaccination sessions for primary and secondary pupils. Additional weekend clinics are also being provided in a number of areas to make it easier for families to access vaccination opportunities.

Children aged two to five who are not yet at school will receive an appointment to attend a local community vaccination clinic.

If you cannot make a booked appointment, please contact the Flu Contact Centre on 0800 917 6115 to rearrange it. Please do not allow appointments to go unused as alternative dates and locations may be available.

Most primary and secondary school pupils will be offered their vaccination through school. Parents, carers and pupils are encouraged to complete and return consent forms as quickly as possible to help ensure children receive their vaccination at the earliest opportunity.

Who can get the flu vaccine?

The flu vaccine is available to:

  • Children aged six months to two years with an eligible health condition
  • Children aged two to five years who are not yet at school
  • All primary school children
  • All secondary school pupils

The vaccine is usually given as a quick nasal spray, often known as a “wee scoosh”. It is painless, takes only a few seconds and helps protect children and those around them from flu.

Weekend drop-in opportunities
In addition to weekday clinics, a number of larger weekend clinics will offer both booked appointments and drop-in vaccinations. Clinics will be open from 9am – 4.30pm.

  • Pollok Health Centre, Saturday 10 October
  • Gorbals Health & Care Centre, Sunday 11 October
