Des Clarke visits spinal injuries unit ahead of Great Scottish Run

  • 2 min read

Broadcaster and Heart Breakfast Scotland presenter Des Clarke visited the Queen Elizabeth National Spinal Injuries Unit this week as he prepares to take on next month’s Great Scottish Run half marathon.

Des dropped in to meet patients, staff and volunteers from Spinal Injuries Scotland ahead of the event on Sunday 4 October, where he will be among thousands of runners taking to the streets of Glasgow.

During his visit, he spoke with patients, including Thomas Ross, as well as staff from the unit and volunteers from Spinal Injuries Scotland, learning more about the support provided to people living with spinal injuries and the difference fundraising can make.

Des is taking part in the half marathon as part of Heart Scotland’s Half Marathon Heroes challenge. Around 70 runners from across Scotland have signed up to join him on race day, raising money for Global’s Make Some Noise charity, which supports life-changing projects delivered by small charities across the country, including Spinal Injuries Scotland.

The visit also offered an opportunity to wish good luck to a team from the Queen Elizabeth National Spinal Injuries Unit, who will be taking part in the Great Scottish Run 10K on the same day. The team is raising money to support the work of the unit and the patients it serves.

Senior Charge Nurse Drew Campbell, who was interviewed by Des during his visit, said: “It was great to welcome Des to the unit and give him the opportunity to meet some of the patients, staff and volunteers connected to our service. We are grateful to everyone taking part in the Great Scottish Run to support causes linked to spinal injury care and rehabilitation, and we’d like to wish all the runners the very best of luck.”
