NHSGGC celebrates 30 years of the Gartnavel Day Surgery Unit

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) is proud to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Gartnavel Day Surgery Unit, which has been delivering high-quality, patient-centred care since 1995.

In both 2023 and 2024, over 2,200 patients received day surgery at the unit, with 2025 projected to see even higher numbers. The unit now specialises in Ophthalmology and Urology day surgeries and continues to be a vital part of the Gartnavel Hospital campus.

To mark the unit’s 30-year milestone, the team hosted a week of celebrations, culminating in a special event. Current and former staff gathered for a celebratory lunch, sharing memories and reflecting on three decades of dedication, innovation, and teamwork.

The celebrations also had a charitable focus. Through a raffle, the team raised £480, which will be used to create a calming space for vulnerable patients. The funds will go toward sensory items and artwork to enhance the environment and support patient well-being.

Three long-serving staff members, Fiona Montgomery (Receptionist), Nicky Mowatt (Charge Nurse), and Jackie Young (Charge Nurse) were recognised for their incredible service since the unit’s opening.

Fiona Montgomery, Day Surgery Receptionist, said:

“I started in 1994 in Medical Records aged 21, then went to Day Surgery in 1995 where I have been for 30 years. I absolutely love working in Day Surgery. I love the interaction with patients and, through the years, getting to know them.

“Day Surgery has always prided itself on giving the best care over the years and the services should be proud of all the feedback and lovely comments they receive from patients, both new and regular.

“I couldn’t wish for anywhere else to work.”

Nicky Mowatt, Charge Nurse, said:

“I started working in Day Surgery in May 1995. It was my first and current job. I had worked in the Day Surgery ward as an agency nurse for one year before the purpose-built unit was opened.

“I was so excited as I was working with an amazing team. I moved to Perth four years later when I got married, but I loved my job so much that 30 years later, I am still here.”

Jackie Young, Charge Nurse, said:

“I started working in the Day Surgery Unit in September 1996 and have loved working here.

“It was great to be involved in the emergence of Day Surgery and watch the unit grow with more and more procedures. I mostly work in Urology Theatre, but I really enjoy the interaction with the patients and all the other members of staff.

“I’ve made great friends, had great fun over the years, and absolutely love working there.”
