Renfrewshire’s newest medical facility opens its doors
NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) is pleased to announce the opening of a new medical facility in Renfrewshire, designed to deliver a wide range of health and care services to the communities of ‘Old Bishopton’ and ‘New Dargavel’.
The newly built Bolerno Centre in Dargavel Village welcomed its first patients last week, extending the provision of services available from the local Bishopton Medical Practice.
The new facility complements the existing Bishopton Health Centre, which underwent a major refurbishment in 2022 and will continue to provide health services to patients.
With five consulting rooms, a treatment room, four multi-use rooms, and a dedicated community space, the combined provision across the two centres makes the practice the largest in Renfrewshire.
In the coming months, additional services will be introduced, including pre-5 immunisations, midwifery, mental health support, and enhanced treatment facilities.
“The Partners at Bishopton Medical Practice are delighted to be expanding our services to both the Bishopton and Dargavel communities. The Bolerno Centre will be a bright, fresh, and modern building and we have been very excited to part of its development,” said Fiona Hird, Practice Manager.
This development is part of NHSGGC’s ongoing investment in modern health and care facilities, following recent openings in Eastwood, Maryhill, Gorbals, Woodside, Greenock, Clydebank, and Parkhead.
Built in partnership with Renfrewshire Health and Social Care Partnership (HSCP) and Hub West Scotland, the Bolerno Centre reflects a commitment to sustainability and community engagement.
“We are committed to delivering high-quality, person-centred care rooted in our local communities and the intentions for this centre will deliver exactly that,” said Professor Tom Steele, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde Director of Estates and Facilities.
Tom continued: “The local population will continue to grow and we’re proud that we have delivered a design and build that will cater to the needs of the people who live in these communities. This project also stands as a testament to successful collaboration, and I am deeply grateful for the contributions of local people, organisations, and businesses in bringing it to life.”
Sarah Lavers, Renfrewshire Health and Social Care Partnership (HSCP), Chief Finance Officer, who has also been the Senior Responsible Officer for this project, said:
“This has been a fantastic project to be involved in, and I would like to thank everyone on the project team, each of whom has worked incredibly hard to ensure the successful delivery of this valuable community asset. The resulting building will enable residents of Bishopton and Dargavel to access a wide range of health and care services in a modern and comfortable setting. From the outset, the project embraced collaboration, and the input from all stakeholders has shaped every aspect of the new facility – from the building’s design to the accompanying artwork and the wider community benefits it has generated.”
Hub West Scotland, Chief Executive, Iain Marley, said:
“The Bolerno Centre is not only a vital and accessible service delivery hub for the community, it also demonstrates NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde’s ambition to contribute to the Scottish Government’s Net Zero carbon objectives across the health and social care estate. Designed in line with placemaking principles, the building incorporates locally created artwork that softens its internal and external appearance, alongside a well-considered soft-landscaping strategy that firmly roots the building within the local community.”
Jon Gettinby, Bishopton Programme Director at BAE Systems, said:
“We’re proud to see the new healthcare centre in Dargavel Village open to the community. This milestone reflects our shared commitment to delivering infrastructure that supports the everyday needs of residents.
“As part of our ongoing investment in the area, we donated nearly one acre of land and provided £1 million in funding to help realise this important community asset. The centre is a welcome addition to Dargavel Village and demonstrates how collaboration can deliver lasting benefits for local residents.”
Patients are advised that there will be a transition period as medical staff work across both the existing health centre in Bishopton and the new premises at the Bolerno Centre. Patients will be provided their appointment location at the point of booking.
