The Queen Elizabeth University Hospital (QEUH) and Glasgow Royal Infirmary have been recognised in the annual World’s Best Hospitals Newsweek league table.

Glasgow Royal Infirmary was voted the highest ranked hospital in Scotland in 26th position, up four rankings from 30th place last year, with the QEUH also making the top 40.

Newsweek’s top 100 hospitals recognises the best hospitals on a global scale across 28 different countries and focuses on a number of factors including patient outcomes, quality of care and access to health services. Now in its fifth year, Newsweek’s 2023 research analysed more than 2,300 hospitals which includes speciality hospitals and also compares contenders across research, innovation and consistency.

Neil McCallum, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde’s North Sector Director said: “I am delighted that the GRI has once again been recognised in these international rankings. It is testament to the dedication and hard work of all our staff at the hospital, and the way they consistently go above and beyond to provide exceptional care for our patients.

“We are all committed to providing world class healthcare across the North Sector and this award is a fabulous endorsement of our ongoing efforts to ensure we are meeting the needs of our patients and their families.

“Our hospital is steeped in history and to be ranked within the top thirty hospitals in the UK for two consecutive years further enhances our reputation as a world class facility.

“I would like to express my upmost appreciation to all of our staff who make the hospital thrive and a fantastic place to work.”

Arwel Williams, Director for NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde’s South Sector, which includes the QEUH, said: “Despite challenges, staff at the QEUH deliver an incredible service, showing great dedication and commitment to the principles of high-quality patient-centred care. Coupled with the cutting-edge research and innovation which takes place here every day, it’s no surprise to see the hospital once again recognised as a top-class care centre within the UK.

“I’d like to take the opportunity to thank all of our staff for their ongoing dedication. This award is a testament to their contribution to healthcare across Scotland and something each and everyone at the QEUH can be proud of.”
