NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde (NHSGGC) has been shortlisted for an education award in Glasgow’s prestigious Inspiring City awards.
The awards, held at the Crowne Plaza on 10 September, recognise individuals and organisations working to make a difference in Glasgow at every level.
The health board, in partnership with the University of Glasgow, has made nominated for its impact in the learning and development of the people of Glasgow.
Andrew Robertson, chairman of NHSGGC, said: “It’s always rewarding to see our ongoing training and work opportunities recognised.
“We have always placed great emphasis on ensuring that our workforce is at the forefront of ongoing health developments and that support staff are fully equipped to provide their essential services.
“The building of the new hospital campus has allowed us to go even further and show our commitment to opening up employment and training to the people of Glasgow and our whole board area which will leave a lasting legacy for our communities.”
The fast paced world of developing medicines, treatments, surgical procedures and related scientific developments requires NHSGGC to constantly refresh and educate its highly trained healthcare professionals.
There is also a requirement for a wide range of support staff to maintain hospitals, feed patients and deliver a wide range of support services such as managing medical records and complex IT systems.
With some 38,000 staff NHSGGC is one of the city’s largest employers and its commitment to reducing inequalities has opened the door to long term unemployed and young people from areas of greater need accessing its training and apprenticeship schemes.
This ongoing work was further boosted by the five year building programme to deliver the new Queen Elizabeth University Hospital and new Royal Hospital for Children which will leave a lasting legacy for communities both in South Glasgow and across Greater Glasgow and Clyde.
Working with our partners we have recruited 660 new employees aged between 16 and 24 between April 2014 and the end of March 2015. All vacancies generated on the new hospitals campus were notified in the first instance to Jobs and Business Glasgow.
A total of 532 jobs were filled in this way including 402 new entrants. Of the total number of posts 170 have been filled by individuals aged 16-24 which includes 106 apprenticeships. In addition, more than 1,926 students and school pupils were engaged through the project.
