NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde introduces education pods for online learning

  • 3 min read

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde have installed education pods across a number of sites to help trainees with online learning and development.

The education pods have been implemented to allow junior doctors to have a private and secure environment to continue their education and training.

The Covid-19 pandemic had a huge impact on learning and the shift towards online working and remote learning has become a crucial component of the professional development for many NHSGGC staff members. However, the challenges of remote learning can be significant with many struggling to find appropriate space on site to undertake online activities during the working day.

The education pods look to provide a solution to these challenges by offering a quiet and distraction free space for staff to engage in online learning.

Dr Colin Perry, Director of Medical Education for NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, said: “We understand our staff may face challenges accessing space to undertake online learning and NHSGGC is committed to ensuring our trainees have the best resources available in relation to their learning and development.

Education pods are situated across NHSGGC sites

“Online teaching has greatly improved accessibility and attendance at teaching and it allows the ability to attend a live event but the learning opportunity is further supported by the event being recorded and available to be accessed at a convenient time.”

There are now 15 education pods that are located across NHSGGC sites including two at Inverclyde Royal Hospital, four at Royal Alexandra Hospital, six at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital and three at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary.

Each pod has comfortable seating, sound-proofing for privacy and trainees are able to access GGC infrastructure and systems from within to ensure they have everything they need to learn effectively.

Dr Perry added: “We hope that the education pods will prove popular and we are keen for as many trainees to utilise this resource as possible.

“We hope these pods will assist in supporting trainees’ professional development and will help provide them with the resources they need to develop their skills and knowledge.”
