A newly qualified doctor cannot wait to work with the Inverclyde community, after officially starting his career at Inverclyde Royal Hospital.

Dr George Reid is one of more than 50 new medical doctors joining the IRH team this week.

The new doctors had their official induction at the Greenock site on Wednesday, August 3. As part of one of his training years, George worked at the IRH as well as the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital and Glasgow’s Royal Infirmary.

The 28-year-old said his experience working with patients and colleagues at the IRH played a huge part in his decision to return on a full-time basis.

George, who is originally from Buckie, said: “You have a real team feel at Inverclyde, you get to know everyone. Some of the best training I have had has been at the IRH, they place so much emphasis on you as an individual and have an interest in your goals and what you want to achieve. I found the training was tailored to me and I’m looking forward to working there again.

“I also really like the patients in Inverclyde, they love their hospital and have a great relationship with the staff. I come from a small town with a real sense of community and the hospital has that too, everyone looks out for each other, I found it a great place to work during my training year and that was why I wanted to come back”.

The IRH was recognised for its commitment to staff, after being accredited by Investors in People in December last year.

Recognised in over 66 countries, IiP is the global benchmark when it comes to assessing great places to work. NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde aims for all staff to be able to give and receive the best at their work, while being involved in making positive changes and improvements. Supported by this approach, George, who has aims of working in respiratory medicine, hopes to continue to develop as he considers his specialty.

He said: “During your five years of training you move jobs every four months, so it’s really unique and you get to experience so many styles and ways of working. That’s interesting and makes your realise what you like and I have always been interested in respiratory medicine. Working through the pandemic has made us all used to very rapid change, with COVID there is so much changing and often.

“I have always been interested in science, what I have realised is there is a combination of interacting with people and problem solving. When you know the solution is having a real impact on someone’s life that is a great feeling”.

The arrival of George, and his fellow junior doctors, comes as the IRH continues its recruitment of registered nurses. A recruitment fair for anyone interested in joining the team takes place on Monday, August 8, at the site’s Education Centre from 10am until 3.30pm.

At an exciting time of service redesign, which will benefit both staff and patients, there are vacancies across nursing specialties in the emergency department, respiratory and acute receiving. The IRH is a significant employer in Inverclyde and the fair will allow those interested to chat about any existing vacancies, learn more about the IRH from experienced staff and even interview for roles on the day.

Yvonne McDowall, Clinical Service Manager at the IRH said: “Inverclyde Royal Hospital is such a great place to work and we would like to encourage anyone who is interested in pursuing a career with our team to come along to our recruitment fair for a chat around our opportunities. Our friendly staff will be happy to speak to you.

“Here at IRH we recognise that the demands on nursing teams have been significant throughout the pandemic and we greatly value the work and commitment from all of our nursing staff, who go above and beyond to deliver excellent services to our patients. This redesign of how we do things will not only benefit our patients but will help us to support our staff”.
