Diabetes team attracts national recognition for improving patient care

  • 2 min read

Diabetes experts from NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde have received a national award for their work to improve inpatient care for those with the condition.

The Integrated Diabetes Team Clyde, which works across Renfrewshire, Inverclyde and West Dunbartonshire, developed a checklist and essential information for nurses caring for hospital patients living with diabetes.

It includes a handy pocket guide with advice on medication, blood glucose and ketone monitoring, the safe use of insulin, and foot ulceration.

The resources have been piloted in NHSGGC’s Clyde hospitals – Royal Alexandra Hospital, Inverclyde Royal Hospital, and Vale of Leven Hospital – with positive feedback from staff.

Last month the multi-disciplinary team, which includes specialist nurses, pharmacists and consultants, won the Excellence in Diabetes Award at the 2025 Scottish Healthcare Awards.

They collected their award at a ceremony held at the Crowne Plaza in Glasgow.

Simona Rahman, Lead Diabetes Specialist Nurse for Integrated Service, said: “We are proud to have this national recognition and it is a testament to the team’s dedication to improving patient safety and advancing excellence in diabetes care.

“We know these resources are a useful tool that could help improve inpatient care for people with diabetes who are admitted to hospital for other unrelated reasons.

“At home, most people will self-manage their diabetes but in hospital, nursing teams will take this over and it’s important to ensure they have quick and easy-to-understand information and advice at their fingertips.

“Our guide and checklist bring together a wealth of expert knowledge to help nursing teams monitor and treat patients effectively.”
