The Cabinet Secretary for Health & Wellbeing, Shona Robison, today performed the topping out ceremony of the new £12.4 million Health and Social Care Centre in Maryhill.
Work began on the state-of-the-art facility in December 2014 and is planned to be completed by Spring 2016.
The new centre will provide improved access to a range of primary care services including:
- Three GP Practices
- Physiotherapy
- Podiatry
- Community dental services
- District nursing
- Health visitors
- Sexual health services
- Health improvement teams offering smoking cessation support
- Youth health services.
- A ground floor dedicated wholly to an Adult Mental Health Facility
The Cabinet Secretary met staff from NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde (NHSGGC), NHS GGC’s development partner hub West Scotland, Glasgow Community Health Partnership and contractor Morgan Sindall.
Health Secretary Shona Robison said: “I’m delighted to be here today as the Maryhill Health & Social Care Centre project takes an important step forward towards completion. This £12 million facility will be a fantastic addition to area, providing the local residents of Maryhill with brand new health and social care facilities under one roof.
“The centre will be at the heart of the community, providing local residents with a wide variety of NHS services on their doorstep. I am pleased to see the space that will be dedicated to adult mental health services – in recognition of the fact that both mental and physical health are interlinked.
“The Maryhill Health and Social Care Centre is one of three health centres opened in the NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde area in the last two years, with a further two under construction and four in the pipeline. The Scottish Government has supported these projects as part of over £2 billion of investment in Scotland’s health infrastructure over four years, to 2015-16.”
Andrew Robertson, Chairman of NHSGGC, said: “Today represents a key milestone in what will be a wonderful new health and social care centre.
“More than £12 million has been invested in locating the centre in a prominent site which will provide residents with a modern, state of the art health care facility fit for the 21st Century.
“This is an ambitious project is focussed on much more than the simple replacement of the existing facility thanks to close partnership working with many other services and the local community.”
The centre will also incorporate ‘Waken into Falling Light’ – an arts and environment strategy. The aim is to develop opportunities that enhance both the external and internal aspects of the centre to increase wellbeing, improve peoples’ experience of visiting and encourage a sense of community ownership of the building.

Roy Greaterox, chair of Cadder Community Council and Public Partnership Forum representative for the Maryhill Health and Care Centre Project Board, said: “The new centre will contribute to the regeneration of Maryhill and improve the area. It will be a wonderful modern building which will provide better access to services and play a part in improving the health of local people”
The design and construction of the new Centre is being undertaken by hub West Scotland who appointed Morgan Sindall as the main contractor.
